Our Lady of the Sacred Heart
OLSH promotes a culture of learning that creates confident young women and encourages the development of creative and critical minds in order to be caring and responsible members of the global society. The initial brief to create a 21st century learning community at OLSH soon developed into a process which led to a deep and considered understanding of not only the educational vision for the college, but also the holistic value of the project to the whole of the OLSH community. The aim of the project, beyond the updating of facilities, was to improve and enhance learning outcomes through a creative envisioning of the learning environment. Through a 3 year step-by-step process, the College and JDH Architects worked closely with the stakeholders to understand the key learning challenges that were faced by the school, whilst simultaneously considering the subjective and spiritual objectives of the siteand the stakeholders. This long envisioning and pre-engagement phase of the design process led the JDH team to think differently, consider equality of opinion of each stakeholder, and generate ideas that led to an innovative design outcome. The JDH tea, engaged in critical and creative thinking processes to unravel the future of education, understand related practices, approaches , relationships and technologies, and the implications these might have on the future of the educational spaces. The development of the masterplan for the project included required an understanding of key issues such as the culture and history of the site where the creative nature of teaching already takes place, increasing connectivity across the site, and the improvement of the interactive and social areas for the students on an already highly developed site. The spiritual requirements of the project culminate in the reflective labyrinth on the roof top, which acts as an inspiring and creative outdoor learning area. The building provides the college with anew multi-purpose hall, TAS, and year 7 learning commons that reflect the progressive pedagogy and learning ambitions of the college. Known as the Hartzer Centre, this building is the collaborative creation of excellent learning facilities and sets a benchmark for the future of teaching and learning design.
